Brussels Court of Appeal condemns Belgium to adopt stricter climate policy

On 30 November 2023, nine years after Climate Case found Belgian governments at fault for their allegedly negligent climate policies, the Brussels Court of Appeal ruled in the Belgian climate case. In its ruling, the Brussels Court of Appeal imposed on the Belgian, Flemish and Brussels governments to adopt a more ambitious climate policy than they already have. Specifically, Belgium must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990. In doing so, the Brussels Court of Appeal is imposing even higher reduction targets than Europe demands.
